Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University’s (ÇOMÜ) Dardanos Campus has become the first university campus in Turkey to receive a Blue Flag.
Speaking at the ceremony held at Dardanos Campus, Çanakkale Deputy Governor Abdul Kadir Duran stated that ÇOMÜ becoming the first university campus in Turkey to receive a Blue Flag is a fine achievement.
Emphasizing that Çanakkale is a valuable and precious geography in every aspect, Duran said, “In this sense, establishing environmental awareness, and after obtaining this flag, advancing it further and protecting it is important.”
Çanakkale Mayor Muharrem Erkek also expressed that Blue Flag ceremonies do not merely indicate seawater quality but signify much more.
Stating that the number of Blue Flags in Çanakkale province has reached 16, Erkek said, “We will increase this number even more in the coming years, but we need to do very important things for this. It is the result of sustainable management at international standards. As Çanakkale Municipality, we attach importance to high-cost environmental investments. Our advanced biological wastewater treatment plant in the city center enables us to obtain these Blue Flags.”
Rector Prof. Dr. Cüneyt Erenoğlu noted that the Blue Flag is the result of work they have put effort into for a year, stating, “This is a beginning. Obtaining the Blue Flag is important, but maintaining it is harder and more important. Citizens and us, as an institution, have important duties in terms of protection.”
Erenoğlu said that reaching 16 Blue Flags in the province with the second longest coastline after Muğla is significant.
Following the speeches, Deputy Governor Duran presented the Blue Flag certificates to Erkek and Erenoğlu. Afterwards, the Blue Flag was hoisted on the flagpole at Dardanos Campus by the protocol members.
During the event, swimmers from Çanakkale Municipality Sports Club and divers from ÇOMÜ gave a demonstration in the sea.
The program was attended by Karabiga Mayor Ahmet Elbi, Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Çağman Esirgemez, Turkey Environment Education Foundation (TÜRÇEV) North Aegean Provinces Coordinator Ayhan Örten, ÇOMÜ Dardanos Campus Economic Enterprise Manager Hacer Boğ, and relevant officials.
